Something From Alice (1988, 1 hour 30 minutes runtime)

My favorite types of movies are surreal and strange, like Eraserhead (YouTube) and Coraline (YouTube).

My friend Jack from Wandering Bones Trading Company (Instagram, Facebook) recently gave me a recommendation for a film. He said that this was “Bill’s kind of movie” and that I’d truly enjoy it. Turns out he was not mistaken.

Something From Alice, also known as Něco z Alenky and Alice 1988, is a Czech film written and directed by Jan Švankmajer in the late 80’s. Jan felt the best way to portray the Alice in Wonderland story was not as a fairy tale, but as a dream.

The movie is light on dialogue but heavy on stop-motion animation and trippy sequences. To best enjoy this film, grab a buddy, grab some bud, and avoid outside distractions as you immerse yourself in this strange world.
